Text Sniffing out disease lesson

TLF ID A002730

In this lesson, students consider contemporary research approaches to disease identification. First, they conduct an experiment to test how sensitive their sense of smell is and explore how our sense of smell functions. Students then learn about at how animals are trained to use their sense of smell to detect human disease. This leads to a discussion on how science research is funded. Students must then assess the merits of two different proposals and write an argumentative essay in support of the project they believe most merits further funding. The resource includes links to downloadable lesson plan, websites, videos, and an assessment rubric. The lesson also features suggestions for engaging girls and spotlights female role models.
